Plot Summary

The Cry of the Icemark is a 2005 young adult fantasy novel by Stuart Hill. The novel, which has been compared to Game of Thrones, follows young Thirrin, heiress to the throne of Icemark. The brave young heiress sculpts her position as a powerful princess while she comes of age during a turbulent time in her country’s history. The Cry of the Icemark is the first book in The Icemark Chronicles series. Fox 2000 purchased the rights to make a film adaptation of the book, but it has not yet been made.

Thirrin Freer Strong-in-the-Arm Lindenshield, who goes by Thirrin, is the thirteen-year-old heiress to the throne of Icemark. Her mother is dead, but many people say Thirrin is a lot like her. In the beginning of the novel, Thirrin is out in the woods hunting with a soldier as her guide. The soldier is tired, but Thirrin wants to keep hunting. She starts following what she thinks are werewolf prints. Werewolves were banned from the kingdom of Icemark years ago, so she wants to capture and interrogate it. Finally, they encounter the animal, which charges at them. Thirrin and the werewolf have an intense battle, which results in the werewolf backing down and running away. This leads Thirrin to believe that werewolves might be sentient, decision-making beings.

Thirrin and the soldier return to Icemark’s capital, Frostmarris. They are greeted by a procession of villagers, and Thirrin dislikes the attention. She meets with her father, King Redrought Strong-in-the-Arm Lindenshield, who is playing chess with his assistant. She tells him about the werewolf and they report the sighting to the grounds patrol. Thirrin is mad that she doesn’t get to lead the search for the creature. She attends her daily lessons but daydreams the whole time.



That night, Thirrin goes to a banquet, where she is exhausted by the facade she has to put on. However, she knows the people of Icemark need to see she is a competent heiress. As news about the werewolf spreads, the king agrees that they need to start monitoring the kingdom more. At the end of the banquet, soldiers drag the captured werewolf into the banquet hall. Thirrin gets to decide how it is killed. However, she surprises everyone by deciding to set it free. She thinks this decision might make the creature her ally in the future. The werewolf acknowledges her choice before leaving.

Thirrin and her guard go for a morning ride, and a bear attacks one of her men. They encounter a fifteen-year-old boy named Oskan who leads them to a cave. He says he will heal the injured man’s arm, and it turns out he is quite a skillful healer. In the morning, he makes them breakfast and reveals that he is the orphaned son of a powerful witch.

Thirrin and her guard depart the cave, leaving the injured man with Oskan. Thirrin returns to her dreaded school lessons. Her tutor is anxious because she is not the best student; he wonders how she will be as ruler. Someone interrupts the lesson to take Thirrin outside for weapons practice. She spends the rest of the day practicing.



Unbeknownst to the people of Icemark, a group of soldiers from the Polypontus Empire is approaching. This powerful empire controls much of the world and plans to take over Icemark, as well. When King Redrought hears of the approaching troops, he mobilizes his entire army against them. The plan backfires, however, when the king is killed while fighting. Icemark’s fate is left in Thirrin’s hands.

Luckily, since she saved the werewolf earlier, Thirrin has the support of werewolves. However, she knows that her kingdom needs more help. Thirrin enlists Oskan to help her persuade the vampire king and queen to join the fight. This is a difficult task because vampires hate humans. However, the vampires greatly dislike the Polypontus Empire. They know the empire will destroy all vampires if it comes to power. So, they agree to join forces with Icemark. King Grishmak, ruler of the werewolves, also advises Thirrin and Oskan to go to the Hub of the World to recruit the snow leopards, who are strong and powerful fighters. For similar reasons as the vampires, the snow leopards decide to join.

When the battle begins, Thirrin’s army is short werewolves and snow leopards because it takes a long time for their people to gather. Thirrin’s army fights well, even though they are outnumbered. Scipio Bellorum, the leader of the empire, is intimidated by the allies and challenges Thirrin to a battle. Thirrin narrowly escapes Bellorum, cutting off his hand in the process. Bellorum’s army steps in to help him, so Thirrin’s army does the same to assist Thirrin. Bellorum’s men escort him away so he can prepare for the final stage of the battle. In the meantime, the werewolves and vampires arrive. This renews the strength and motivation of the allies. Thirrin’s army wins the battle by a landslide, killing most of the empire’s army. Bellorum, however, escapes, which sets the scene for the next installment in the series.
